Bought a baritone uke off Ebay for my kid.   I forget the brand.  It's sold buy some guy in HI that has a bunch of $2K ukes in his Ebay store.  It's actually pretty nice and game with a very nice hard-cloth-covered case.  Came to $90 shipped.

My kids only five so I have no idea if he'll be able to play it.  He wanted to try my mando to play Twinkle Twinkle Little store.  First two notes are open but then he had to try to fret the second fret and it was hopeless with his little finger to try to fret to steel strings.  It should be possible with the nylon on the uke.

I figure the bari would be could to start as if he does play it, he'll learn git-compatible fingerings.

I tip-toed (not through anybody's flowerbed) over to the uke side and bought a soprano for myself yesterday.  It's loads of fun.  I'm taking songs like Alabama Jubilee and Salty Dog that have progression of fifths runs in them and doing them both in open postion and closed.  I'm not a good singer but find that I can sing with the uke easier than mandolin.  Can't believe I waited so long to try ukulele!

My kid got so many toys for Xmas, I decide to hold off on giving the uke for a while. I  figure if I give it to him when he's bored, he'll have more of a chance of being interested in it.  Right now, he's got a million new things to play with.

My brother and sis-in-law got the train for both me and our son as a combined present.  Actually it's my birthday so it's kinda for all three.  Makes the train 2/3rds mine :-)

Speaking of uke...Here's a tune I wrote and a friend and I did, I'm on uke, he's on guitar, guess which is which.

A uke is a great instrument for a kid, I would have suggested a tenor, but a baritone is ok too.
