I've used one of the Intellitouch bone white tuners since I got my mando.  Everyone has been raving about the Itelli IMT-500 which is really pretty cheap too.  A tad over $20 shipped.  So I bought one for $21 shipping off eBay.

Ways it's better than my old one--

Smaller (good for mando case)
Locks on much better and is more accurate.
Lights up.
Has nice rubber pads that don't slip and I imagine yield good acoustic coupling.

I normally don't upgrade anything if I have something that works.  I'm a cheapskate and also not into conspicuous consumption but the $21 was well worth it.  Now the old one can live in my guitar case.

I'd like to check one of those out. I have a 30's Gibson A1 with a tapered headstock (thinner at the tip, thicker at the nut), and it's just to thin at the tip for the standard Intellitouch to get a grip.

Yep, I had the same white Intellitouch but recently got the Intelli IMT-500 for $20 off eBay.

These are really hot in my area. I know some people who bought theirs at a BG festival and paid near full retail at $35.00. Janet Davis sell them for $29.95. Amazon.con has them for $20.79, so better deals are out there.

Definitely better than the Intellitouch. I keep the Intellitouch as a spare now.

The IMT-500 would clamp to something as thin as sheet of cardboard.
