Posted 04/12/2006 02:06:06 PM | | My kid comes home from school a week and mentions the term "buffalo soldier" is some context, I forget.
Now to digress a bit. We live in a town that, although I wish it weren't, is about 96% white. There's maybe one or two black kids in his school and one black teacher (in the afterschool program). I think the black teacher mentioned Bufflo Soldier. Our kid is 1/2 African American.
So, I went out and bought the Bob Marley "Legends" album and play it a lot in the car when I pick him up for school. He really likes it and especially the "Buffalo Soldier" song. I also ordered him a Bob Marley tie-dyed T-shirt for a stocking stuffer.
Now another digression. When you adopt a kid from some place like say Guatamala or Korea, you're supposed to get a bunch of Guatamlan or Korean tchotchkes to put around your house so you can say "that stuff there is your culture, kid".
So, it is okay to indoctrinate my kid with Bob Marley? Maybe I could start on John Lee Hooker next. I'd rather it be Reggae and Blues than Rap ;)
