too cold outside to work today. here's some cool mando-content from youtube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbTJ8gDAvn8

my old band opened for johnny gimble in seattle spring '05. i can proudly say that johnny heard me play steel guitar and he didn't get sick, mad, or anything.

I actually just check that out after what eight months.  It's cool.  There's something unnatural about a guy in a cowboy hat taking a break on a tenor sax or trumpet but it works.

Sometimes I really like when strings get mixed with honky tonk piano and horns.  I always liked the way Dave Bromberg mixed horns in with his fiddle tunes and guitars.

Horns and reeds were actually a pretty regular feature in western swing bands. All of those guys on the video played in Bob Wills' band back in the 40's. Have you heard the Billy Jack Wills discs? There's great trumpet playing throughout. I'm a big fan of the trumpet-Chet Baker and Dizzy Gillespie are two of my favorite musicians.
I saw Slim Gailliard in the 80's, and he took my cowboy hat and wore it for the whole show.

I remember reading somewhere that Bill Wills left about 500 Texas Playboys scattered around the country so many people played in his band over the years.

I checked out some BW's videos on You Tube.  You know who he reminds me of, Dean Martin.  Supposedly BW had a thing for the bottle so I guess that fits.
